The DVSA has announced important changes to how many times learner drivers can modify their practical car driving test bookings.
These updates are designed to reduce last-minute changes and help more learners get access to test appointments.
Here’s what you need to know.

Limit on Driving Test Changes from 31 March 2026
From 31 March 2026, learner drivers will only be able to make two changes to an existing driving test booking.
A change includes adjusting the:
Test date
Test time
Test centre
Swapping appointments with another learner driver who already has a booking
If you’ve already used all your changes under the current rules, you will still receive two additional changes from 31 March 2026 under the new system.
Moving Your Test to Nearby Centres Only
From later in Spring 2026, there will also be a restriction on where you can move your test.
Learners will only be able to reschedule their test to centres near the one they originally booked. This is intended to stop people booking tests far away and repeatedly moving them around the country.
The DVSA advises that your limited changes should only be used for genuine needs or emergencies.
What Counts as a Test Booking Change?
Each of the following counts as one change:
Changing the date of your test
Changing the time of your test
Changing the test centre
Swapping appointments with another learner driver
However, if you change more than one thing at the same time, it still counts as just one change.
Example
If you move your test from Northampton on 4 June to Kettering on 12 May, that counts as one change, even though both the date and test centre were changed.
What Happens If You Need More Than Two Changes?
If you have already used your two permitted changes, the only option will be to:
Cancel your existing test
Book a new appointment
Refund Policy
You will receive a full refund if you cancel your test at least 10 full working days before the scheduled test date.
If you cancel later than this, you may lose the test fee.
Our Advice to Learner Drivers
Because changes will now be limited, it’s important to:
Only book your test when you and your instructor feel you’re fully ready
Avoid unnecessary changes
Plan around work, school, or holiday commitments before booking
These new rules mean test slots should become more stable, helping learners get their driving licence sooner.
